Keynote:
Co-Creating Circular Futures: Lessons from Rural Guatemala
Mona Mijthab, founder of Mosan, is a strategic designer and creative entrepreneur. She uses her background in industrial design to find unconventional ways of problem-solving. Mona designed and developed the Mosan solution, including the urine-diverting dry toilet and an off-grid pyrolysis system. Mona has more that 10 years experience of teaching and facilitating innovation processes worldwide. In all her work she integrates design thinking with community-centered innovation and circular economy principles.
Mosan is an international social enterprise offering circular dry sanitation services, currently in rural communities at Lake Atitlán in Guatemala. The Mosan team co-creates culturally appropriate, circular, climate-positive and regenerative systems with innovative waste treatment, which promotes health and wellbeing of the population, avoids contamination and enables the recovery of valuable nutrients, thus closing nutrient cycles and supporting long-term regeneration. Mosan's work includes on-farm research with enriched biochar, nutrient recovery from urine, toilet and urinal designs and farmer co-creation.
